La Provence Estate

Activities for Guests

To compliment the many unforgettable experiences on the Estate, La Provence is conveniently located less than an hour drive from Cape Town and easily accessible to Western Cape attractions.

“An essential part of our South African experience, this was our fifth visit. Carin and Johan are wonderful hosts, so kind and helpful. Their staff are lovely – so cheerful. The garden and pool are gorgeous and the cottages are very comfortable. Carin is a front of knowledge about the local area, restaurants and attractions.”

Guests are welcome to enjoy the following activities during their stay:

Tennis court
Hone your tennis skills on a court located among the lush vineyards and overlooking the spectacular Simonsberg for daytime or evening play. Carin is a provincial tennis player and certified coach, and offers guests the option to book a single or multiple coaching sessions with her.  Rackets and balls are available upon request.

Swimming pool
Take a dip in the large, freshwater swimming pool. The cemented farm dam is filled by natural spring water from a fountain up in the neighboring Franschhoek Mountain.

Embrace the peaceful qualities of farm life while strolling through the breath-taking gardens that have been blooming seasonally for over a century.

Wine cellar tour/tasting
Book a tour of historic La Provence cellar with winemaker, Johan, and taste his special wines straight from the vats. Johan is especially proud of his port.

Ostrich feeding
Meet Jack and Susie, the Van Rensburg family’s ostriches residing on the Estate.  During certain hours of the day guests can join Johan for feeding, and in the summer season guests can see the pair proudly protecting their eggs.  Stroke Jack’s neck and feed them pellets by hand.

Peach picking & packing
During the harvesting season in November, guests are welcome to pick and pack peaches – and taste the wonderful fruit as well.

Wine harvesting
In late February and March, Johan harvests his wine grapes, and invites guests to join him and pick their own basket.  Guests may also observe the crushing and pressing process. They can also sample fresh pressed grape juice and the fermenting juice, known as must (or Federweisser). View Merlot, Cabernet, Semillon and other Cape wines in the making!

Hiking trails
Spend an hour or half a day exploring the vineyards and peach orchards.  Nearby trails wind to the top of the 1,618meter Wemmershoek Mountain peak. The owners’ pack of Lassie Collie dogs are excellent guides and will gladly escort you!

Join Johan on an expedition around the farm to catch wild Guinea Fowls.
